Purpose:

Vocabulary for Success enables students to tackle unknown words and enlarge their vocabularies by employing several effective strategies.  Words are presented in context.  Now included in this structured, developmental program are writing activities and reading techniques that will help students on standardized tests as well as in their daily lives.

The new features of this program were designed in response to nationwide teacher survey and to current research, which both indicate that new vaocabulary words are most effictively presented in context, and that students need more instruction and practice in writing.

Special Features:

Features that are new to this revision of A Scholarship Vocabulary Program are underlined.  Note that this program now includes a fourth book.

Lesson Previews open the lessons with selected vocabulary words presented in context. 

Lesson Words are the new vocabulary words, which are listed in two sections, along with respellings definitions, synonyms, and context sentences. 

Exercises include the following:

  • Sentence completion
  • Vocabulary in Context: A paragraph or dialogue containing vocabulary words is followed by questions.
  • Synonyms: Students must replace synonyms with vocabulary words in sentences.
  • Antonyms: Students use antonym clues to determine vocabulary words in sentences. 
  • Concise Writing: Using vocabulary words, students rewrite wordy sentences.
  • Vocabulary Skill Builder: These activities focus on skills such as context clues, connotation and denotation, and etymologies. 
  • Writing Skill Builder: Students develop skills such as organizing and developing paragraphs, writing topic snetences, and writing persuasive essays. 

Unit Reviews and Enrichment  include the following:

  • Close Reading
  • Concise Writing
  • Analogies
  • Vocabulary Skill Builders

Cumulative Reviews  contain additional exercises.

The Vocabulary Index lists the vocabulary words, along with page numbers and indicates whether they are lesson words or synonyms. 

The Pronunication Symbols refer to dictionary respelliings of the vocabulary words. 

Organization

Each of the four books contains three units.

  • Unit I includes Lessons 1 through 4 and a Unit Review and Enrichment
  • Unit II includes Lessons 5 through 8, a Unit Review and Enrichment, and a Cumulative Review for Units I and II.
  • Unit III includes Lessons 9 through 12, a Unit Review and Enrichment, and a Cumulative review for all three units.
